structural engineering consultation during the seismic reinforcement of this
25,000 square foot, four-story commercial office building. The upgrade
involved reinforcement with unreinforced brick exterior walls, wood floors and
roof framing, and timber pile foundation. The original building was constructed
before the 1906 earthquake.
The building was severely damaged by fire and was an idle ruin before
rehabilitation. Demolition was problematic due to the instability of the
existing structure. The Audiffred Building is noted on the National Register of
Historic Places.
