MLK Community Center
Investigation and Repair Design
Richmond, CA
|
The Community Center provides the
City of Richmond with sports facilities, child care, a center for the elderly
and visually impaired, and a variety of other community service programs.
Interactive Resources was called in by the City when a portion of the Center's
roof collapsed. Our structural engineers evaluated the roof and
determined that the Gymnasium roof needed to be entirely replaced,
and recommended that the walls of the recreation center be temporarily
shored to prevent further collapse of the structure prior to the
replacement. Our architects and engineers then designed the needed
repairs to the Gymnasium, and the upper and lower roofs.
The repair work included demolition of the Gym roof structure, and installation
of new roof trusses, rafters, roof deck, built-up roofing, roof drains,
overflow scuppers, and mechanical system. The project also included
repair of the walls, installation and repair of the existing metal
halide/incandescent lighting fixtures, the addition of sixteen inches of height
to the parapet to accommodate the increased roof slope, and the installation of
a completely new maple floor, with new basketball backboards and new volleyball
inserts. The City elected at the same time to add a new forced air
heating and ventilating system to the Gym to replace the outdated gas furnaces.
