This 90,000 square foot, three story, multi use facility is located at Oakland
City Center and is the final phase of the City Square complex.
Interactive Resources provided comprehensive architectural services for the
design of a building shell that reflects varied tenant requirements. These
program requirements included an urban streetfront for retail clients, a three
story office space for a sports medicine clinic, as well as multi-level
athletic club facilities.
The 60,000 square foot health club facility includes a gymnasium, racquetball
courts, aerobic exercise areas, a swimming pool, storage and equipment rooms,
restroom and shower facilities, management and training offices, saunas,
whirlpools, and a snack bar lounge area. The building was constructed on top of
an existing sub level parking garage that covers the entire site. This garage
structure was originally designed to support a two story retail mall.
The building design established continuity with its surroundings by using the
materials pallet of the adjacent structures and added a new material, glass
block, for the gymnasium portion of the athletic club. The materials were
chosen partially for their lightweight, as required by the limitations of the
garage structure beneath, and for their flexibility and color. The building is
distinctive in its extensive use of glass block, which simultaneously provides
natural light, privacy, insulation, and a safe impact resistant wall surface
for basketball court activities.
