Post-Earthquake Evaluation and Rehabilitation
San Francisco, CA

The historic six-story unreinforced
masonry (URM) building was severely damaged in the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta
earthquake and rendered unsafe. Interactive Resources was called upon to
evaluate the condition of the building, and provide comprehensive architectural
and full seismic structural engineering rehabilitation services for this 66,000
square-foot building. Constructed in 1910, the building sits on the foundations
of a building that was destroyed in San Francisco's 1906 earthquake. Services
included complete analysis of defects as well as structural earthquake damage
assessment and retrofit as well as extensive code research for full Title 24
compliance and accessibility.
The building was outfitted with a new structural lateral force-resisting system,
strengthened existing URM and concrete walls, and upgraded existing wood floor
and roof diaphragms. Redesign of the interior includes new locations for stairs
and elevators. A new foundation system was installed under the existing
building and the brick facades were preserved while upgrading the building for
prime office space and ground floor retail.
