Jolly Giant Dining Commons, CSU Humboldt
Seismic Renovation
Arcata, CA
Interactive Resources was retained by the California State University system to perform a seismic evaluation of the Jolly Giant Commons and Bridges. The Commons 34,500 square feet of enclosed area is utilized as a multi-purpose facility serving the Campus’ resident student community. Uses include a large food service facility, Housing and Dining offices and maintenance shops, and student recreation facilities. Built in 1967, the building is constructed of non-ductile reinforced concrete columns, floor and roof slabs, with some shear walls and with concrete and steel floor and roof beams. The Bridges are constructed of concrete, and link the Commons to the surrounding residence halls.

We determined that the building and bridges did not meet seismic performance requirements, and that extensive seismic upgrading would be required to meet California State University/Seismic Review Board performance criteria. Interactive Resources prepared construction documents for the seismic upgrade of the building and bridges, and extensive interior and exterior renovation of the building.

A major component of the building renovation was accessibility improvements, which included a system of two exterior elevators and bridges that connect the building to the upper campus level. Additional accessibility improvements included the renovation of toilet rooms, exterior ramps, and accessible parking.

Interior improvements included the expansion of ground floor student recreation and meeting areas, and the expansion and renovation of the third floor food service and dining facility. Exterior improvements included new areas of metal and low-slope roofs, new storefront systems, canopy-covered walkways, and extensive renovation of the entrance plaza.

This project required extensive phasing and coordination planning, as the building was required to remain open during construction in order to continue providing student resident services.
