Jolly Giant Pedestrian Bridges, CSU Humboldt
Seismic Evaluation and Upgrade
Arcata, CA
|
Interactive Resources was retained by the California State University system
administration to perform a seismic evaluation of the two pedestrian bridges
that provide access to the Jolly Giant Dining Commons building.
Built in 1968, both bridges are constructed of reinforced concrete. The bridge
at the north side of the building spans the street and then continues as a
series of spans that access the residence halls. The bridge at the south end of
the building consists of a walkway and stairs.
As a result of field observations, construction document review and analysis of
the structures, we determined that the non-ductile concrete moment frame
bridges were structurally inadequate. Interactive Resources subsequently
prepared construction documents for the seismic upgrade of the bridges.
