Interactive Resources was retained by the Trustees of the California State to
perform an evaluation of the East Gymnasium according to the guidelines
established by the California State University Seismic Review Board. The 40,800
square foot East Gymnasium on the Humboldt campus is an exercise/athletic
facility with concrete walls and a large-span steel roof structure, installed
over locker rooms and similar auxiliary uses.
Following the completion of the structural review, Interactive Resources
prepared plans and specifications for structural upgrades, including the
construction of strategically placed reinforced concrete shear walls, the
creation of a horizontal steel trussed diaphragm at the roof level, and
substantial reinforcement of critical framing connections.
This project also called for asbestos and lead abatement, refinishing of the
wood gymnasium floor, and expansion of the storage facility at the ground
floor. The design was developed with an emphasis on minimizing disruption to
the existing facility during construction and retaining existing functions and
programs upon completion.
