Prince Kuhio Federal Building and US Courthouse
Honolulu, HI

The existing child care playground
at the Prince Kuhio Federal Building – U.S. Courthouse in Honolulu, Hawaii was
an uninteresting space virtually devoid of plant materials, natural forms, and
interactive play elements.
A new design, prepared in conjunction with
MIG,
Inc. of Berkeley, California, responded to the needs and wishes
expressed at a staff workshop. The new plan provided children with an
interesting, fun, and challenging environment that supports child development
and offered flexibility in programming. The playground included:
-
Upper and lower play areas
-
Sand and water play
-
Expanded shaded areas for better shelter during hot and rainy weather
-
More landscaped areas including garden planters
-
Play houses and program poles providing children an area to build and
manipulate their environment
-
New play area surfacing
-
Creative play areas simulating the ocean sports of Hawaii
-
Music area including a wind organ, drums, chimes, etc.
These elements were incorporated within the strict federal requirements of
safety, security and low maintenance
