This innovative residence designed by Kotas Pantaleoni Architects is located in
a well-known ancient landslide area in North Berkeley and the site is quite
near the Hayward Fault. The demanding architectural program required
innovative structural solutions to resist earthquake forces, and to mitigate
building damage from the ongoing movement associated with the ancient
landslide.
The chosen structural solution was a very stiff mat foundation, capable of
resisting the anticipated differential settlements and other ground movement,
and a combination of structural steel frames and wood shear walls to resist
earthquake forces.
