Contra Costa County Modular Workstation Design
Contra Costa County

Interactive Resources provided architectural services to Contra Costa County for
projects located in five buildings. The County’s Employment & Human
Services Department challenged Interactive Resources to take buildings
currently filled to capacity, and design new ergonomic workstations using the
“Equity” line manufactured by Knoll.
The process began with the collection of data, including client goals, staff and
storage requirements, equipment needs, and existing room configuration and
size. After organizing the information, designers defined workstation building
blocks and developed workstation standards with client input. The result was a
polished, attractive design that capitalizes on the best features of the
building (such as sunlight) while working within the limitations of the
existing building’s size and configuration.
Designers considered how workstations best fit into each room, and determined
the layout and components of the modular workstation. In order to capture
underutilized space, workspace design often involves the removal of walls and
blocking off/relocating doors while meeting codes and standards (including
mandated aisle clearances, and complying with the Americans with Disabilities
Act). In some buildings, components and systems were substantially upgraded and
revised. In other buildings, simple patch and repair, and a new coat of paint
updated the overall look.
