Roof membrane failure was reported at the 21,250 square-foot roof of the South
Wing of the Administration Building, which houses the Sonoma County Supervisors
and County Council offices. Originally constructed circa 1958, the
original dead-flat built-up roof - over a cast-in-place concrete substrate -
was replaced with a new built-up roof approximately 10 years ago. The
roof replacement included the addition of lightweight concrete topping, sloped
to provide drainage. However, the replacement roof also failed due to
large amounts of water in trapped in the lightweight concrete exacerbated by
unsuccessful remedial efforts.
Interactive Resources worked closely with the County to develop a solution that
would provide an effective membrane system that could be applied with minimum
disruption to this fully occupied building. A cold-applied APP Modified
Bitumen system was selected to minimize odors associated with roofing.
Noisy work was scheduled for off-hours.
