First Church of Christ, Scientist
Reading Room and Sanctuary
Point Richmond, CA

When the First Church of Christ Science, Richmond, wanted to downsize from their
existing home on Barrett Avenue, they called on Interactive Resources to design
their new reading room and sanctuary, which is located in an existing 2-story
building in historic downtown Point Richmond.
Interactive Resources had already provided architectural services on the
restoration and reconstruction of the building’s second story after it was lost
in a fire in 2002.
The restored commercial building may not have seemed like the most likely home
for a church, but has been transformed into an inviting, contemporary worship
space and has sparked communitywide interest.
Sustainable design measures included: the use of cork flooring,
striated sunflower board for countertops, recycled content carpeting, ceiling
fans for air circulation, and skylights in worship space to provide natural
daylighting.
