Maritime Center Rehabilitation Nears Completion
As a volunteer and board member of Rosie the Riveter Trust,
Tom Butt, FAIA, LEED® AP
has been the pro bono project manager for this project since 2006, assembling grants totaling over $4.5 million and arranging additional Historic Preservation and New Markets Tax Credits for another $3 million. The Maritime Center was a cutting edge project built in WWII to serve women working in Richmond’s sprawling shipyards,

and it is today part of Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historical Park.
Rosie the Riveter Trust is the National Park Service’s non-profit partner, and Tom was its founder and president for the first decade of its operations. When it opens in August, 2011, the Maritime Center will provide classrooms and administrative offices for Richmond College Prep Charter School and offices for the Richmond Community Foundation. One classroom will serve as an interpretive center for the National park Service, complete with authentic toys and artwork from the WWII era.
