Sustainable Design

Sustainable design is about more than the longevity of a building—it also addresses the goal of conserving energy and other resources.
We incorporate "green" techniques into our designs to reduce the amount of energy needed to operate a building, and explore many other options during the initial programming and design phases, such as the use of non-toxic, renewable and recycled materials, indoor air quality systems, and daylighting utilization.
We maintain LEED-accredited staff in-house, and are members of the US Green Building Council.
Interactive Resources has a long history of incorporating sustainable design measures. Founded in 1973 during the first energy crisis resulting from the Middle East oil embargo, the firm responded to rapidly rising energy prices by building an early practice based on energy-efficient design and alternative energy applications. The early work of the firm's president, Thomas K. Butt, FAIA, set the pace in California in the 1970's and early 1980's, influencing subsequent state energy conservation legislation and speeding the incorporation of energy conservation considerations into the mainstream of California architectural practice.
