As part of the University of California, Berkeley’s campus-wide electrification and clean energy initiative, Interactive Resources, Inc. provided architectural and structural engineering services for the infrastructure upgrade of Campus High Voltage Switch Station 5. The project focused on modernizing critical electrical infrastructure while addressing significant existing-condition, structural, and waterproofing deficiencies associated with the underground electrical vault and adjacent facilities. The work supports UC Berkeley’s long-term transition to a more resilient, reliable, and sustainable campus electrical distribution system.
Interactive Resources initially conducted an extensive existing-condition assessment and consultation in coordination with UC Berkeley facilities staff. The assessment evaluated the historic Hearst Memorial Mining Building and associated electrical infrastructure, with particular attention to existing conditions affecting the high-voltage equipment, underground vault, building envelope, and subgrade construction. The team prepared a comprehensive assessment report that established recommendations and concept-level design solutions for replacement of the electrical equipment, subgrade waterproofing, concrete slab crack repairs, and improvements to the protective canopy and lighting. A ROM cost estimate was also developed to assist the University with project planning, budgeting, and implementation.
Based on the assessment findings, Interactive Resources prepared construction documents for removal of the existing high-voltage switchgear bank and installation of new switchgear and associated infrastructure. A new steel-framed protective structure was designed over the replacement equipment, providing improved protection and long-term durability. The project also included design and installation of a new concrete sump pit to improve management of groundwater and incidental water within the underground vault.
A major component of the rehabilitation was addressing persistent water infiltration into the underground electrical vault. Concrete slab cracking and deficiencies were repaired to restore the watertight integrity of the substructure. Pressure grouting using urethane foam was designed beneath the existing floor slab and along concrete walls to seal pathways for subgrade water intrusion. These measures were particularly important for protecting sensitive high-voltage electrical equipment and improving the long-term reliability of the facility.
Additional improvements included replacement of deteriorated interior flooring and replacement of existing underground vault access ladders with new code-compliant ladders, improving safety and accessibility for university maintenance personnel.
The completed project demonstrates Interactive Resources’ ability to integrate architectural, structural, waterproofing, and infrastructure improvements within an existing and historically significant campus environment. By extending the service life and reliability of Switch Station 5 while accommodating modern high-voltage electrical equipment, the project contributes to UC Berkeley’s broader campus electrification goals and the continued preservation and functionality of its historic campus infrastructure.
