Interactive Resources, Inc. provided architectural, engineering and construction administration services for the roof replacement at the Sylvia Mendez (LeConte) Elementary School, which is located at 2241 Russell Street in Berkeley, California.
The Sylvia Mendez project was a phased project that included a complete re-roof of the entire school (multiple buildings), replacement of large skylights and window system, and restroom accessibility upgrades. Each of these activities were phased around accommodating school activities and allowing for DSA approval of specific elements of the project (skylight and windows) that required DSA approval and longer lead times.
An initial roof assessment was conducted to verify existing conditions. The existing roofs were smooth surfaced, built-up roofs with elastomeric coating over the top. The approximate square footage of the roofs is 44,500 square feet. The roofs were in very poor condition and needed replacing. The roof replacement included removing the existing roof down to the deck and the installing a new modified bitumen roof with new metal, new counterflashings, new crickets, new walkpanels, etc., and the removal and replacement of existing skylights.
