The YMCA is a leading nonprofit organization committed to strengthening communities by empowering young people, improving the health and well-being of people of all ages, and inspiring community engagement. The Richmond Parkway YMCA provides a broad range of programs and services, including an early learning center, swimming pool, gymnasium, fitness center, and after-school care programs.

Interactive Resources, Inc. was retained by the YMCA of the East Bay to convert existing racquetball courts on the ground floor of YMCA Building 2 into a new early learning center. The project transformed underutilized recreational space into a safe, functional, and welcoming environment designed to support early childhood education and care. The design was developed in close coordination with YMCA staff and stakeholders to establish program requirements, classroom configurations, operational needs, and circulation patterns while working within the constraints of the existing facility.

The remodel included multiple classrooms with dedicated, State-mandated restroom facilities accessible directly from the classroom areas. The design incorporated age-appropriate classroom layouts, new walls and doors, new ceilings and flooring, and coordinated furniture layouts, with furniture procurement by the YMCA. Accessibility improvements were integrated throughout the remodeled areas to provide compliant routes, clearances, and facilities in accordance with applicable ADA and California accessibility requirements.

A new outdoor play area was also designed to support the early learning program and provide children with safe, accessible outdoor activity space consistent with State of California requirements. The project required careful consideration of the relationship between the classrooms, restrooms, interior circulation, and outdoor play areas to support efficient staff supervision and safe movement of children throughout the facility.

Interactive Resources provided comprehensive architectural services from initial programming through construction completion. Services included stakeholder coordination and programming, preparation of construction documents, Title 24 compliance documentation, technical specifications, permitting, bidding assistance, and construction administration. The project demonstrates Interactive Resources’ experience in adapting existing community facilities to accommodate evolving program needs while addressing accessibility, regulatory requirements, safety, functionality, and the continued operation of an active YMCA facility.
