Interactive Resources, Inc. Celebrates 50th Anniversary

East Bay Architectural and Engineering Firm at Forefront of Sustainable Design Since 1973

Richmond, CA, September 7, 2023—Interactive Resources, Inc. celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Founded in September of 1973, Interactive Resources is one of the oldest architectural firms in the Bay Area, providing comprehensive architectural services to a wide range of private and public sector clients.

The firm’s portfolio includes federal, state and municipal facilities, energy-efficient public schools, sustainable commercial buildings and cannabis facilities, historic preservation projects, and the revitalization of public spaces. “Interactive Resources” refers to the multiple disciplines that the firm brings together for a holistic approach that considers factors such as energy conservation and renewable energy integration, including solar photovoltaic array design, water conservation, and use of locally sourced materials to create environmentally responsible and resilient spaces.

Interactive Resources opened its first office in Richmond in 1973, just a block north of the firm’s location today. The energy crisis resulting from the Middle East oil embargo was already in full swing, and in its response to widespread concern caused by rapidly rising energy prices and fuel shortages, Interactive Resources quickly gained a reputation for energy-efficient design and alternative energy applications.

“We believe that architecture has the power to shape the way people live, work, and interact with their surroundings. With this as our guiding principle, we have successfully designed and implemented numerous projects that not only minimize environmental impact but also enhance the quality of life for the communities we serve” said Tom Butt, FAIA, founding principal and president. “Sustainable design should be accessible and inclusive, reflecting the voices and aspirations of the people who will inhabit the spaces we create.”

“As we look towards the future, we remain committed to pushing the boundaries of sustainable design and fostering vibrant, resilient communities,” said Andrew Butt, AIA, Managing Principal and Design Director. “Through our expertise and dedication, we continue to make the heart of our practice a positive impact on the built environment to create spaces that inspire, connect, and thrive for generations to come. And we’re incredibly grateful for our clients and colleagues, many of whom we’ve worked with for decades, and have been instrumental in our longevity and continued success.”
